The NHS Headquarters in the South West

Cancer Drugs Fund

The Cancer Drugs Fund took effect from Friday 1 April 2011, replacing the Interim Cancer Drugs Fund which operated from 1 October 2010 to 31 March 2011.

A copy of the national guidance can be found at: http://www.dh.gov.uk The policy for management of the Cancer Drugs Fund in NHS South West is below.

Funding requests can only be made by an NHS cancer specialist, supported by their hospital trust, on behalf of an individual patient.

Applications are considered by an independent panel of regional cancer experts, chaired by James Palmer, Medical Director of the South West Specialist Commissioning Group and consultant neurosurgeon at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust.

Patients should continue to discuss treatment options with their cancer specialist to decide on the best care and treatment plan for them.
