About Us

The South West Strategic Health Authority was established on 1 July 2006 is accountable to the Department of Health for the performance of the NHS in the South West.


Our role is to ensure the NHS in the South West is run effectively and that NHS services, staff and organisations are developed to meet the needs of the future.  We are a key link between the Department of Health and the local NHS.


The Authority oversees a budget of approximately £8 billion, which is used to care for the 5.1 million people who live in the South West.


Every day more than a hundred thousand people are treated in hospital, see their GP or are cared for by the NHS and Social Care in the South West.


The South West Strategic Health Authority has three main roles:

 

  1. The strategic leadership of the NHS in South West England.
  2. The development of NHS organisations and NHS staff in the South West.
  3. Ensuring the local NHS operates effectively and delivers improved health and healthcare performance.

 

The South West Strategic Health Authority oversees the performance of 14 Primary Care Trusts.

The South West Strategic Health Authority has two deaneries; the South West Peninsula Deanery and the Severn Deanery.

 

The South West Peninsula Deanery is responsible for the commissioning and quality assurance of postgraduate medical and dental education and training across Devon and Cornwall; it provides support for GP Training, Foundation Training, Core Training and Specialty Training for all trainees within the Peninsula.

 

The Severn Deanery ensures that Severn trainees are supported to become the next generation of highly skilled doctors and dentists. The deanery is committed to the personal and professional development of their trainees in a patient centred environment.
